FAQs & Tips
What is a digital portrait?
A giclee print is printed on high resolution, wide format printers with special pigment based archival UV inks that are specifically designed for art reproductions. The term "giclee (gee-clay) comes from the French for "spraying dots." The digital portraits are printed on PremiereArt Water Resistant Canvas (350gsm, 19mil). The print is then sealed with a special laminate that makes it water resistant, smudge proof and protects it from UV radiation. It will last a lifetime.
How to photograph your pet
The best time to take outdoor photos is on an overcast day, or in a bright shaded location. Avoid using a flash or being in bright sunlight if possible. If your pet is dark colored, be sure the background is light enough to give a good contrast.
Get down to his height so you're not shooting "down" at him while he's looking up at you. Take both close-up and full body photos to see which you prefer. It helps to have a "helper" standing by with a squeaker toy to bring their attention back to the camera. And be sure to have treats ready for a job well done.
How to Digitize your Photo!
Have the original photo* scanned at your local photo shop, e.g., Kinko's, Ritz Camera, etc. or send me a copy of your photo to digitize. If you have it scanned by someone else, be sure to tell them to scan it at "millions of colors," a resolution of 350 dpi, and use a "lossless" format such as .tif or .png. .jpg files are also acceptable if they are not compressed too much.
Finished size & resolution affects the quality of the final painting.
OR — You can send me a copy* of your photo and I'll digitize it for free.
Resolution
We require higher resolution than suitable for onscreen viewing. Digital files must be at 200+ resolution and not less than 1600 x 2400 pixels. e.g.,
8" x 10" = 1600 x 2000 pixels at 200dpi (dots per inch)
*Always send a COPY of your photo, never the original.
